> Pain in spite of treatment for 95% of patients

A survey presented at the Lisbon congress of the european Federation of the circles of the Iasp (International Association for the Study of Pain) raises the alarm on the pain misunderstood and uncontrolled, and on the gaps that still hinder a correct approach to the problem.

The survey has involved 12 months 294 patients in 13 european Countries, and finds that – despite a year of treatment – the metà of the patients did not improve, 19% suffer from più of the first, and only 12% were prescribed opioid ad-hoc. 28%, and even confesses to suffer to such a point as to desire the death.

The survey, called ‘PainStory’ (Pain Study Tracking Ongoing Responses for a Year) – says a note – it emerges that 83% of patients ‘enrolled’ has a prescription for pain medication, but the 30% takes-the-counter medications to control it. Even if 95% of those who is in care had a moderate to severe pain, only 12% is treated with non-opioids strong, 25% opioid moderate and 43% with medication non-opioid. In addition, during the year of observation, only 23% of the sick has been changed medication and replacing it with a più strong.

Almost halfà of patients report side effects after the treatment and the più the common is constipation, found in a patient on two, of which 49% were treated with opioids. Finally, 26% of treated with opioids takes laxatives to ease the constipation. “This research reveals alarmingly that in our società c’è a clear majority of patients who suffer from chronic pain that is not controlled – warns Tony O’brien, a specialist in palliative care at the università of Cork (Ireland) – This is a serious problem of the sanità the public must be addressed with urgency”, he stresses.

“patients need to be heard and evaluated by experienced and professional staff – adds – Some of the individuals selected will have the ability to undergo an experimental treatment controlled with opioids until you reach a good level of analgesia. During this treatment you will prevent undesired effects, including constipation. The goal is to ensure the patient to experience the best qualityà of life possible,” she says.
