press Release by the Citizens ‘ Committee for Human Rights – may 24, 2006
MORE THAN 17 MILLION CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD ARE PRESCRIBED psychiatric DRUGS.
In may ’06 USA Today revealed that the u.s. Food and Drug Administration (or FDA) is in possession of the documentation relating to 45 childhood deaths caused by the new antipsychotic drugs. The experts claim that the number of victims could amount to around 450, sinceé the harmful side effects reported to the FDA are only 1-10% of the total. Worrying is the fact that the prescriptions for antipsychotic drugs in subjects in età between 2 and 18 years of age is increased from less than 500,000 in 1995 to about 2.5 million in 2002: usò represents an increase of 400%.
in Parallel with the sales of these same medications increased by 1500%, from 500 million dollars in 1991 to over $ 8 billion in 2003. The deaths caused by antipsychotic drugs represent the third large category of deaths caused by drugs lethal, currently prescribed to millions of american children; antidepressants now have the obligation to bear on the packaging the “black box” warning of the FDA, who warn how the drug causes in children and adolescents reactions to the suicide; an advisory committee of the FDA has recommended that a similar “black box” to be affixed on the packaging of medications for ADHD, to warn that the substance causes seizures, heart attacks and sudden death in children. At the international level, there are more than a dozen warnings launched on the side effects that psychotropic drugs have on children and adolescents, such as liver damage, heart failure, seizures, hallucinations, psychosis, mania, violent behavior, suicidal tendencies and death. Ciò however, we continue to prescribe these drugs to more than 17 million children around the world. the Italy statistics show that 30,000 children are in the care of psychopharmacological. In March 2003, the Minister of Health had approved a decree that bore the Methylphenidate in Table IV, removing it così by the drugs (Table 1 and 2). On the 26th of April 2006, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Justice issued a Decree that lists the methylphenidate in table 1 and 2 drugs. The Ministry of Health has requested a review of the più depth of the so-called mental illness in età adolescent and is in the starting phase of a new project named “Project ADHD” under the supervision of the Istituto Superiore della Sanità (ISS). The project ADHD has several stages including:
- diagnostic Interviews given to parents through questions that encourage the parents to describe the attitudes of the children ;
- Questionnaires or, better test for parents and teachers, to detect information on the behavior, social, academic and emotional well-being of the children in età between 3 and 17 years of age;
- Evaluation of abilityà of reading and calculation.
The Citizens commission on Human Rights (CCHR), in Italy, is present as an Onlus is part of an international group of Human Rights protection in the field of mental health, for years collecting information and testimonies on the administration of psychotropic drugs to children, for instance, last month the Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics found that the 100% of the psychiatrists who determine the diagnostic criteria for the so-called “mood disorders” (which include the “bipolar disorder” and “disorders schizophrenic/psychotic states”) in order to include them in the Diagnostic and Statistical of Mental Disorders (DSM) of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) are financially linked to the pharmaceutical industries that produce their medications. In the past, antipsychotic drugs were causing a toxic reaction lethal, called neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which is estimated to have caused the death of 100,000 americans. It took 20 years of legal battles before that, in 1985, the APA has sent to its members a circular of warning on the use of such drugs. Mrs. Ellen Liversidge, who in 2002 lost the child following the administration of an antipsychotic medication, has stated that: “On the label, there was no warning. And even the doctor warned. You really need that così many people are killed? We still need another mountain of newspaper articles? All of usò should be seriously taken into consideration by the parents, the teachers and the Italian institutions.
